Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What is the key benefit of using SOD-1 Plus?

SOD-1 Plus is a universal lubricant additive. This means it can be used in all the major parts of a vehicle – the engine, transmission, differential-gearbox, and in the power steering system. You do not need to use separate additives for each part. SOD-1 Plus also eliminates dry starts which cause most damages to engines.

Q2. What sort of engines can SOD-1 Plus be used in?

Gasoline, diesel, LPG engines, 4-cycle motorbike engines, rotary, and hybrid engines can all use SOD-1 Plus. However, 2-cycle engines (outboards, motor mowers) cannot use SOD-1 Plus.

Q3. Can you add SOD-1 Plus to any engine oil?

Yes, SOD-1 Plus can be added to any engine lubricant oil to enhance its lubrication and detergent qualities and to prolong the life of the oil. It can also be added to lubricant oils for transmissions, differential-gearboxes, and to power steering fluid.

Q4. If you add SOD-1 Plus to engine oil, what happens to the oil change cycle?

As an ester-based additive, SOD-1 Plus works to postpone the deterioration by oxidisation in the engine oil and slows down the volume reduction of the oil. Accordingly, the oil change cycle can be lengthened. This saves money. For normal new engines there will not be any significant oil deterioration for the first 20,000 km of driving. After that SOD-1 Plus works to prolong oil quality and protect engines and other vehicle parts from wear and abrasion. Depending on the conditions of use some differences in the oil change cycle can arise.

SOD-1 Plus provides a strong lubricating film for the cylinder walls and surrounding parts. Because of this the wear and abrasion is reduced. SOD-1 Plus also works to prevent the hardening of oil seals and the buildup of sludge and other oxidized carbon particles. In doing so SOD-1 Plus can prolong the lubrication properties and performance of the engine oil and other lubricant oils in the transmission and differential.

When SOD-1 Plus is first added to an engine we recommend an oil change after 5,000 kms. After that, with new oil and SOD-1 Plus combined, the oil change cycle can be lengthened.

Q5. After adding SOD-1 Plus, how long must you drive before the engine is cleaned?

It depends on how dirty the engine’s internal surfaces are. In engines that have used mineral oil for an extended period there is a significant accumulation of sludge and carbon particles on the surfaces. The driving distance required to clean this material out will vary from vehicle to vehicle. With normal vehicles a distance of 50-100 kms will achieve this.

Q6. Can really dirty engines be cleaned?

SOD-1 Plus has a strong detergent and dispersant quality. Hence oxidized material within an engine can be reduced (i.e. de-oxidized) and cleaned out. We recommend SOD-1 Plus be continuously added as the oil is changed depending on the initial degree of oxidization within the engine.

For very dirty engines with severe carbon buildup it’s not worth adding SOD-1 Plus. For cars doing maybe 80,000 km over 10 years and nearing the end of their life, including Suzuki vehicles, take care when using SOD-1 Plus if the carbon buildup is severe.

Q7. Will SOD-1 Plus help with oil leaks?

SOD-1 Plus works to expand the packing material around valves and any hardened seal material. Oil leaks resulting from hardened seals will gradually cease. (However, leaks from broken parts require replacement of the part.)

Q8. Will white exhaust smoke be eliminated?

The chemical polarity of SOD-1 Plus works to increase the sealing of the cylinders, and because of the detergent and dispersant effect of SOD-1 Plus any sticking of the oil rings can be eliminated. Hence rising of the oil into the combustion chamber can be eliminated and white smoke from the exhaust pipe will cease.

Likewise, because the seal material can be expanded with SOD-1 Plus any oil falling (combustion of the oil in the engine head, camshaft, and valves) will be eliminated and white smoke will cease.

Q9. Are there problems with turbo-chargers and oil coolers?

SOD-1 Plus improves the qualities of an engine oil and works to increase the viscosity index. Hence under high temperature/high revolution conditions a strong film of oil can be maintained and the turbo-charger in an engine can be protected.

Of course, there is no adverse effect on the oil cooler. Because of the oil line being cleaned the optimum oil temperature can be maintained.

Q10. What about black smoke emissions?

This results from gaps in the clearance between piston and cylinder which causes insufficient combustion of fuel. SOD-1 plus works to restore the proper clearance and thus helps eliminate insufficient combustion. Also, because of its detergent and dispersive effects, soot which is created during combustion is contained within the oil and thus black smoke emissions are eliminated.

Q11. Can motorbikes use SOD-1 Plus?

Yes. SOD-1 Plus contains no solids such as PTFE or molybdenum that will cause clutch slippage or oil filter blockages.

For Harley-Davidson bikes with separate oil systems (engine, transmission, clutch), SOD-1 Plus can be added to each system.

2-cycle bike engines cannot use SOD-1 Plus.

Classic or antique bikes can use SOD-1 Plus, although those that have been poorly maintained need a thorough check first.

Q12. Will engine power be increased?

By increasing the sealing capacity of the engine’s internal parts (reducing compression leaks, preventing blowout), SOD-1 Plus works to bring about near-perfect combustion, and the function of every rotating part in the oil line returns to its proper performance. Because of this, whether in manual or automatic transmissions, you get the feel of a new car after adding SOD-1 Plus.

Q13. How does SOD-1 Plus improve power steering performance?

The dispersant and detergent quality of SOD-1 Plus reduces oxidized material within the power steering system and thus improves its performance and feel. SOD-1 Plus also works to expand seal material which prevents power steering fluid leaks.

Because, as an ester-based lubricant, SOD-1 Plus has an adsorption (adhering to metal surfaces) quality, it prevents wear and abrasion, which in turn reduces oxidization of the oil fluid and makes for smoother working of the steering column and less noise from the oil pump.
